Obama Wins, Clinton 2nd, Edwards 3rd 1/27/08

Obama wins the South Carolina Democratic Primary with 55%...
Hillary, Obama, & Edwards have defended their religious beliefs
to our LGBT community again & again that they believe that
marriage is between a man & a woman. Yet they continue to seek
our support promising us civil unions that provide about 1/3 the
benefits of marriage
Obama stating in his Martin Luther King Day speech in
Atlanta that "We have scorned our gay brothers & sisters
instead of embracing them
" as he embraces anti-gay ministers.
Hillary, whose husband Bill, strapped us with DOMA &
"Don't Ask Don't Tell" now saying these Acts should be
revisited.
And with Edwards on the bottom of the heap now that all
the other Dem hopefuls have bowed-out, still holding strong
on his religious beliefs yet saying we should have rights.
I just wish @ this point of the game that Gore's recent
pro-gay marriage position would rub off the candidates
& finally the Dems would come clean.... :)

I thought I'd share this email I got from Parallel Mormon....

Charlotte,

First of all, I am humbled and honored that in individual such as yourself, accomplished in activism and public awareness, took a moment to blog on my site.

I am not ashamed of what I know to be true, and I have a strong, personal testimony of the truthfulness of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). Thus, as a gay man, a man struggling with SSA, same sex attraction (but rising above it), I am not ashamed to assert that the eternal truth is to be found in the plan of happiness, which culminates in marriage to someone of the opposite sex.

Thus, if asked to voice my opinion or vote on the issue, the issue being gay marriage, my answer is yes to the plan of salvation, no to gay marriage.

That having been said, I truly mean no one any harm. So let me clarify a few points.

1) I do not believe that gay marriage is a threat to the institution of marriage. I agree with you that the greatest threat to marriage comes from heterosexuals. Moreover, it should be obvious that gay parents can and are every bit as wonderful, loving and inspiring as any other parents. Of course this is true! We're all children of God, and anyone who adheres to belief in Him, true belief, knowing that He is no respecter of persons, should thereby already know this and not need to be convinced or persuaded otherwise.

2) I do not hold a candidate's view on gay marriage as crucial to winning my support, unless the candidate is passionately anti-gay rights/marriage, in which case I cannot support someone of suspect of hate-mongering or bigotry. As you well know, simply not supporting gay marriage in and of itself is not proof of bigotry. Trying to stir support of one's candidacy by appealing to anti-gay sentiment is grounds to suspect bigotry. As a matter of fact, if a candidate is pro-gay rights, I feel comfortable with this sign of the candidate's goodness.

3) I have not and will not lobby with signs or march against gay marriage because such is not my nature or faith. I believe in marriage between a man and woman and I show this by quietly living my life in accordance with my cherished faith and beliefs; I have no need to impose my religious views, because my views on this matter are purely religious, on anyone. I follow the Book of Mormon's admonition that the law should have no power over anyone because of their religious belief.

I am also fully aware that not only my belief is religious, your's is too. A religious belief need not carry that name or belong to an organization or movement that identifies itself as a religion. Gay activism is a religion with creeds in the broadest sense of beliefs people choose to adopt and live by with the faith/belief that these tenets, views and practices will make them happy and better people. I respect your religious beliefs as well as mine, simply stated. So

I take no offense at my Muslim brothers and sisters simply because they do not believe Mesih to be Allah's Son, nor do I feel daunted to affirm my belief that Christ is the Son of God. Similarly, for religious reasons alone I believe marriage to be for man & woman to each other, and I take no offense that you have a different view on it. You're obviously trying to educate people on your view, I only wish to live out my view in peace, but if asked, I'll share my view, and if asked to vote specifically on this issue and nothing else, I'll vote per my faith. Otherwise, I do not support candidates who make it appoint to lobby agaisnt any gay rights.

4) I welcome dialogue. Let's listen to each other, respect, agree on all we can, honor each other's right to hold a different view on some sensitive issues and not race to the extremist tradition which states "if you disagree with me on this one issue, the interaction is over, since it's all or nothing."

I do not think to convince you of anything other than that even opposing sides should listen to each other respectfully, which you truly seem to believe, I must add.

Take Care!
